About Jim Cohen

Long before Jim went to law school, he loved and studied music — Music & Art High School (now LaGuardia High School — where he studied voice) and lots more. Eventually, he took a turn (guess it was to the right) to get a JD and Masters of Law in Tax from NYU and he has practiced law since 1967, co-founding in 1971 the New York City law firm, Kleinberg, Kaplan, Wolff & Cohen, where he still is a partner and a well-known NYC tax/estates attorney.

Jim has written songs for many years and, in recent years his song writing has accelerated. Most recently, he has written the songs — lyrics and music, for two musical plays: “Soldier’s Song” and “My Bear Friend, Ted.” The two stories were written by his wife, Joanne. “Soldier’s Song” has his most recent love songs and humorous songs. “My Bear Friend, Ted” has his most recent kids’ songs. Two of his songs have been honored — for more information, please click on “Tikun Olam & Other Songs” above or below.

Musical plays by Jim & Joanne:

“Soldier’s Song” is a love story about a talented but poor Puerto Rican boy and his girlfriend, from a privileged family in Charleston, how they are separated by his service in the U.S. Army and his capture by Al Qaeda and how it all works out in song.

“My Bear Friend, Ted,” a play for children, is about a friendship between a little girl and her real bear friend, Theodore (don’t call him “Teddy,” he likes to be called “Ted”), a hunter who tries to take him away, and how it is all resolved happily, again, of course, in song.

The music in the plays, and more information about the plays, are easily accessed by clicking on Musical Plays at the top of this home-page or clicking on the play’s album cover below.

Slide Shows and Videos:

Jim is also an avid photographer. Two of the subjects he likes best are the beautiful island of Puerto Rico (particularly in and around Palmas Del Mar, a resort of spectacular beauty on the Caribbean coast in Puerto Rico) and photos out his window overlooking the East River in New York City. The photos have been combined as slide shows with three of his songs — please click on “Slide Shows” above or below. As well, a number of his songs have been performed at the National Art’s Club in New York — please click on Videos above.

Jim has two goals for this web-site. First — to get his music “out there” in the world. Singers, agents and other interested folks can contact him at — jim@jimcohenmusic.com — or through his other contact information (click Contact above). Second — for you, whoever you are, to enjoy the music!
